The best flooring options for modern interiors

Get the lowdown on modern flooring options

If you’re looking to modernise your home, renovate an apartment or office space or a new build, flooring decisions will feature top of the list.

When it comes to flooring there are enduring design choices that will provide the necessary foundation to shift with our lifestyle, blend with the latest furniture purchases and compliment on-trend must-haves.

And, in the case of modern architectural design, which champions streamlined and clean lines as well as large, open spaces, solid timber flooring, premium oak flooring, pre-finished engineered flooring and laminate flooring all come out trumps.

Solid Timber flooring

Authenticity never goes out of style, and when it comes to modern aesthetics, a solid timber floor natural beauty and timelessness.

Hardwearing and high-end are what solid timber floors are renowned for, and with two distinct styles – traditional tongue and groove or parquet – available in 13mm, 19mm or 21mm thicknesses, with widths varying from a 65mm wide board to 220mm wide, you’ve got options.

So, what’s the difference between the two styles?

Tongue-and-groove is an ever-popular solid wood flooring choice. Its individual boards have interlocked edges that are hidden when installed. Each length of wood has a tongue – or ridge – on one side, and a channel along the other, so the boards lock together and stay flat. Parquet flooring is a created by installing lengths of wood in geometric, repeating patterns (ie Herringbone / Chevron / Basketweave / Finger Parquet).

Alongside real and warm aesthetics, solid wooden floors play the long game and can be sanded back and recoated, and in many cases can be installed over concrete or timber subfloors, and directly over joists.

Premium Oak engineered timber flooring

High-quality materials never go out of style, and our Premium Euro-PRO European Oak engineered timber flooring is the perfect flooring partner for any modern interior.

Available in two thicknesses (15 or 20mm), with either a 4 or 6mm (respectively) top Oak wear layer of solid European Oak in either a prime (no knots), feature grade (knotty) or variable bandsawn (rustic with bandsaw marks across the planks), this engineered timber flooring is solid enough to withstand everyday wear and tear and offers a more stable flooring option thanks to its moisture resistant cross-play base.

Premium European Oak flooring withstands and endures. Because it’s imported in its natural state, every floor is coated to our clients individual requirements, with either an oil, hardwax or polyurethane finish – check out colour options here.

It can also be laid over existing concrete, timber and joists (20mm only), and directly over underfloor heating systems, making it both a versatile, stable and robust flooring choice for the family home, the Bach, the office or restaurant.

Pre-finished Engineered Timber Flooring

Modern design exudes a hassle-free, clean and chic persona, which is why pre-finished engineering timber flooring is the ideal companion.

Pre-finished engineered timber flooring ticks both the effortless and cost-effective boxes. With all the hard work completed – sanded, stained, sealed – the floors are ready to install in place.

Unlike real timber flooring, the practicalities of pre-finished timber veneer floors are a win-win for many homes and businesses. With pre-finished flooring, it’s easier to install in and around fixtures and can be walked on then and there – no waiting around for coats to dry.

With its numerous colour and texture options, water and humidity-resistant capabilities, and hardwearing promise, pre-finished timber veneer is easy to clean and maintain – a plus in highly trafficked spaces.

Laminate Flooring

Uniformity, versatility and practicality are the calling cards of modern aesthetics, and laminate flooring follows suit. With a durable surface – and a 15–25-year product warranty, laminate flooring is dent, fade and scratch resistant with the added bonus of a water resistant surface. It’s these reasons why it’s well suited to multiple spaces and places – the family home or bustling restaurant scene.

Stylish but healthy are prerequisites for any new build or renovation project, and laminate flooring achieves both. Laminate floors are hypoallergenic, containing no chemicals or substances that can trigger allergic reactions, and they are extremely easy to keep clean. Let’s not forget that laminate flooring is a quick and simple floated installation with its Uni-clic locking system.
